PLACES OF WORSHIP APPROACH

Modern church practices are somewhat different from that of 16th century churches. These differences are also reflected in the type of architecture requested for by the church client. First it is important to understand the culture of the worshippers as well as the local culture. The design becomes a bridge between these two cultures if they are different.

Churches are not only a place for worship but also a converging shelter for other social activities such as weddings etc. A church design should understudy these elements and more as well as the scope of use of the building, articulate these in the strategic and design briefs prior to conceptualisation.

The concept, focusing on the theme of worship can then build on these key pieces of information. Once again as the church falls under the “sui generis” building type in terms of planning, it is crucial to work closely with the authorities. Our latest church design had a smooth planning approval grant process as a result.
